Bernice Stanley

Ms. Bernice Brooks Stanley was born Oct. 29, 1925 in Bertie County, N.C. She was one of five children born to the late Fred Brooks and Levi Rudison. After moving to the Suffolk area, she worked as a nursing assistant with SECEP for many years, while serving as an active member of the Rosemont Civic League. She was a member of New Calvary Baptist Church.
Ms. Stanley was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Stanley; daughter, Delores Jones; brother, Leroy Gatling; sisters, Thelma Brooks and Louise Gatling.
She leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, Charlie Brooks (Dorothy) and Harry James Jones (Dorothy); and a sister, Mary Smith; devoted granddaughter, Sherita Wright; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren, a devoted caregiver, Sarah Bynum and a host of other family and friends.
Ms. Stanley will be on view from noon to 6 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 14 at the funeral home and the family will receive visitors at 210 N. 7th St. at all other times. A service of remembrance will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, Feb. 15 at New Calvary Baptist Church, Rev. Robert “Black” Wilkins Jr., pastor. She will be laid to rest in the T.E. Cooke-Overton Garden of Carver Memorial Cemetery.
