James Ware Jr.

James G. Ware Jr., 70, passed away Thursday, February 11, 2010. He was born in Suffolk and has been a Peninsula resident for 47 years.
Mr. Ware graduated from Suffolk High School in 1957 and from Virginia Tech in 1961 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering; he was a member of the Highty Tighty Regimental Band of the Corp of Cadets. He also graduated from George Washington University in 1968 with a master’s degree in personnel management. He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding in 2000 after 39 years as a contracts administrator.
He was a charter member of the York River Symphony Orchestra; a charter member of the York River Concert Band; a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the National Rifle Association.
Mr. Ware was preceded in death by his parents, James Gilmore and Faye Cross Ware; and a sister, Barbara Ware Powell. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sara McNeill Ware; a nephew Lawrence Neff Powell and his wife Tammie of Columbia, SC; and a great-niece Laura.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at Yorkminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David Pierce officiating. A reception will follow in the church social hall. Interment will be held at 3:30 pm in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk, VA. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Amory Funeral Home, Grafton.
