The Cavalier Singers are doing everything they can to raise money.

The choral group from Lakeland High School must raise a total of $11,000 to go on a spring break trip with the school’s chamber orchestra to Loyola University in New Orleans.

“These kids are so talented and gifted,” said Harold Cason, chorus director. “I believe they are one of the premier groups of the area. I would love them to get experience and exposure. They’re talented and gifted, and I want the world to hear them.”

Last year, the orchestra director from Loyola visited Lakeland and worked with some of the students. Cason said the director invited them to Loyola.

“The school is in the top 30 percent of the music colleges in the country,” Cason said. “Going will give the kids in Suffolk a great opportunity to get out and experience what they have to offer.”

While visiting, they will attend a Loyola workshop and perform at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. They also will participate in an exchange program with other high schools in New Orleans.

“Sometimes kids just need that reinforcement,” Cason said. “Mom and Dad can tell you to do something, but when someone else tells you to do it, it reinforces that point. Sometimes, you just need someone else to apply the techniques.”

The students have been working since November to raise funds for their trip. Thus far, they have raised $4,000 through candle sales, doughnut sales, a bowl-a-thon and payments by students toward their trip.

“They’ve been doing a great job,” Cason said. “They’re determined to go. But because of the recession we do have some kids whose parents were laid off, and we don’t want any child to be left behind.”

The students will perform a program prepared for Black History month at 7 p.m. on Tuesday for the PTSA at Lakeland. Those who want to help out can leave donations at Lakeland. Checks can be made out to the “Choral Club.” Students also will hold a Café House on March 12.
