NORFOLK – Norfolk Scope’s introduction to the Eastern Region boys basketball tournament was memorable and dramatic. Unfortunately, for King’s Fork, it was a heartbreaking finale to its season Wednesday as the defending state champions lost in triple overtime to Maury, 87-86.

The Bulldogs led by 10, 52-42, with 5:13 left in regulation before Maury’s offense caught fire.

Maury’s point guard Sim Frazier scored 30 points, including back-to-back three-pointers that brought the Commodores within four points with just over three minutes left in regulation. Jamal Ferguson scored 22 of his 24 points after halftime for the Commodores.

The Bulldogs were led by senior center Davante Gardner’s 37 points and 17 rebounds. Jay Copeland and Dion Bivens added 22 points and 10 points, respectively, but both fouled out of the game. King’s Fork had three key players out due to fouls by early in the third overtime.

King’s Fork (24-3) had the ball with the game tied and the last chance to win in regulation and the first overtime.

In the second half of the regional tourney doubleheader Wednesday night, Nansemond River couldn’t follow its huge upset in the tournament first round. Kecoughtan steadily pulled away despite a couple surges by NR for a 72-48 win.

Kecoughtan led from wire-to-wire after jumping out to a 7-2 lead. Good outside shooting kept Nansemond River (15-11) in the game for a while. Morris Johnson had 16 points and eight rebounds for NR, but Kecoughtan outrebounded NR 49-19. Brian Clarke scored 12 points and Ashton Moore had nine points for NR.
