Area high school students who are graduating this year and planning to attend Paul D. Camp Community College next fall should check out the following scholarship options:

Camp to Camp Scholarships

Funded by the Ruth Camp Campbell Foundation, the Camp-Younts Foundation, and the Camp Foundation, $5,000 scholarships for graduating high school students residing in Franklin, Southampton or Isle of Wight provide $2,500 for the first year and $2,500 for the second year (contingent upon attainment of a 2.50 GPA or higher for the first year).

Criteria for selection include three letters of reference and enrollment for at least 12 semester credits in a degree or certificate program at PDCCC for both fall and spring semesters.

Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship

Sponsored by the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education, this scholarship is available at each of the 23 colleges in the Virginia Community College System. PDCCC’s recipient will receive up to $3,000 for a full year of tuition, books and fees for fall 2010 and spring 2011 semesters.

The student selected for this merit-based scholarship will be a full-time, associate degree-seeking student attending college for the first time who has demonstrated academic excellence during high school, as well as a commitment to develop his or her leadership skills.

The Virginia Foundation for Community College Education was created to help turn imagination into reality for the thousands of Virginians who dream of going to college. Working hand-in-hand with Virginia’s community colleges, the foundation seeks to guarantee financial assistance to all those who want a college education.

Presidential Scholarship

This annual $500 scholarship award is given to a graduating high school senior residing in Franklin, Suffolk, Isle of Wight or Southampton. Criteria for selection include a 3.0 cumulative GPA or better (but no less than 2.50); enrollment in a degree of certificate program at PDCCC; and motivation shown by preparation for chosen vocation, including school subjects, related work and activities, and community-service activities.

Also required are three letters of reference and an essay on how this scholarship will help the applicant achieve his or her educational goals.

Scholarship deadlines for fall semester

The application deadline for scholarships for 2010 graduating high school seniors is April 16.

Recipients will be notified by May 7. The application deadline for regular fall scholarships is June 25, with recipient notification by July 23. Regular fall scholarships will be featured in an upcoming column, and information on both sets of scholarships will be posted on the college Web site.

Registration for fall semester classes will be held May 3 through Aug. 17. Fall semester begins Aug. 19.

Community Resource

& Education Fair

The International Paper and Western Hampton Roads Community Resource and Education Fair will be held at PDCCC’s Regional Workforce Development Center in Franklin on Wednesday, from 1 to 8 pm. The fair will feature service providers specializing in health care and wellness; personal and family issues; budget and mortgage counseling; education and training; and small business start-up and operating assistance.
