Staff members in several city departments got to show off their new space in an open house Friday for relocated city departments.

The former Department of Social Services building has been revamped to include the Office of the Voter Registrar, Human Resources, Risk Management, Public Works Administration, Storm Water Maintenance and GIS departments. The Social Services Department moved to a new Hall Avenue building last summer, which it now shares with the Health Department.

The departments in new homes were previously located in leased spaces, which was costing the city more than $200,000 each year. In addition to making regular lease payments, the city was responsible for maintenance at many of the old locations, meaning that officials do not expect maintenance costs to rise significantly.

In addition, the city anticipates a $35,000 savings in the annual energy bill for the building thanks to a $473,000 federal stimulus grant. The money was used to replace the old air handling equipment with new, energy-efficient air handlers.
