HAMPTON – Derek Miller nosed ahead on the 30th circuit and showed the way to his first win of the season in the 50-lap Top Dog race, the featured event of Saturday evening’s Towne Bank 200 presented by GEICO to benefit the March of Dimes for the Arena Racing Hampton Roads Pro Series at the Hampton Coliseum.

Jordan Wood drew the pole for the event. He shared the front row with Robbie Davis. As the race got going, Davis hung tough on the outside and edged ahead of Wood by half a car-length at the end of the first three laps.

On lap 6, Charlie Green overhauled Davis to take the lead. His stay at the front was short-lived, however. On the very next circuit, a major fracas broke out in Turn 2. When the smoke cleared, half the field was involved to some degree, including Green and Davis, who were sidelined by the incident.

Back under green, Wood was the new leader, slipping ahead of Matt Midgett. Meanwhile, Miller was up to third. Miller grabbed the top spot on lap 30.

Miller and Wood continued their door-to-door battle until lap 34 when they made contact on the backstretch. While Miller drove away, Wood spun out in Turn 3.

The last of the race’s six yellow flags was unfurled on lap 42 as Craig Carlton, Travis Wall and Nelson Moody spun off Turn 4.

As the field gathered for a dash to the finish, Miller and Aaron Leach were in front, followed by Adam Florian and Midgett.

Under green for the last time, Miller bolted ahead of Leach and brought Florian with him, to second. Miller opened a two-length advantage over Florian and, by the end, that gap had grown to three lengths as Miller eased to the win. Florian, Leach, Scott Prillaman and Mike Dayton completed the top five.

In the battle for the $10,000 series title, Florian, of Suffolk, lost one point to Prillaman, of Suffolk, on the night. Heading into next weekend’s Friday-Saturday doubleheader, Prillaman holds an 11-point advantage, 347-336.

It’s worth noting that each driver’s two worst outings are thrown out before the final points are tabulated. In the current “adjusted” standings, Florian is within four points of Prillaman’s lead.

Starting from the pole position, Scott Prillaman fought off an early challenge from Adam Florian, then cruised to his second straight win in the 50-lap A Main. For the season, Prillaman’s record shows four A Main wins and one B Main victory.

Prillaman and Florian remained side-by-side for the first three circuits before Prillaman edged ahead.

The only yellow flag flew on lap 12 when Josh Ayer spun in Turn 4 and collected Spencer Saunders, nearly launching Saunders over the outside wall.

At the halfway point, Prillaman enjoyed a two-length advantage over Florian. As the second half of the event unfolded, the gap contined to grow. By the finish, Prillaman’s margin of victory had swelled to nearly half a straightaway.

Nelson Moody led all the way from the pole to nab his first win of the season in the 50-lap B Main.

The event got off to a rocky start with four caution flags in the first 10 circuits. As the field prepared to return to green on lap 15, Moody showed the way, followed by Mike Dayton and Denver Alvis.

At lap 30, Moody enjoyed a full-straightaway edge over Dayton, who was up by half a straightaway over Charlie Green.

The sixth and final caution flag of the race came out on lap 47. Under green for the final time, Moody led Dayton, Green and Aaron Leach in a four-car breakaway. At the finish, Moody was the winner by a car-length over Dayton.

Cody Turbitt bolted out front on the start and drove to his third feature victory of the season in the 50-lap C Main.

At the finish, Turbitt was the winner by three car-lengths over Travis Miller. Miller, however, failed to clear the post-race inspection and was disqualified. Matt Midgett moved up to second in the amended rundown.

Connor Hall recovered from an early setback and rolled to his fifth straight victory in a 30-lapper for the Youth Series.

Cullen Roberts started on the pole and grabbed the lead out of Turn 2 on the opening lap, pulling ahead of Hall. At the beginning of lap 2, Macy Causey and Hall tangled at the start/finish line and Causey spun to bring out the first caution flag. Causey and Hall were both relegated to the rear of the field.

Hall sliced through the pack and was back into second place by lap 4. Hall gained the lead past Roberts on lap 12. Within 10 laps, he had extended his margin to nearly half a lap.

Hall wound up winning by a straightaway. Roberts was second and Gummy Cook was third.
