If something’s going on at First Baptist Christian School, it’s safe to assume senior Becca Ballance is leading it.

Ballance is president of the school’s Honor Society and Student Government Association. She’s in the Beta Club, was the Peanut Fest Princess representative from the school and organized fundraising for the senior trip for First Baptist’s first senior class.

She’s a straight-A student and as a member of the National Honor Society, she tutors other Crusader students a few mornings each month.

“It’s just about helping the school be a little better,” Ballance said about tutoring.

As a student in First Baptist’s first senior class, a class with 11 students, it’s a perfect spot for a student who’s a leader in so many ways. Ballance is even the starting center and leading scorer for the Lady Crusader basketball team.

“Basically it means we’re kind of the trailblazers. We’re testers, but that’s okay. If we do something, a project or a fundraiser, and it’s not that good, at least people after us know that,” Ballance said.

“I really like being in a small school. You get to ask questions during classes, I’d probably ask questions even if I was in bigger classes, but it’s nice to have that close relationship, to be more one on one with a teacher,” Ballance said.

Down the road, Ballance sees herself doing something “in a helping field.” She’s thinking about chiropractic sports medicine, physical therapy or solution-based psychology.

As far as college is concerned, Ballance says, “I’m kind of just getting started weighing my options,” but at the same time, she’s considering North Carolina Wesleyan, because if she is First Baptist’s valedictorian, the school would pay her full tuition.

Ballance volunteered at a library last summer and plans to work at a retirement home this coming summer.

At First Baptist, Ballance helped set up Parents Night Out, in which high school students watched all the younger kids one night, while parents had the evening to themselves.

Ballance’s efforts on the basketball court for First Baptist illustrate quite a bit about the school as a whole. Two seasons ago, the Lady Crusader varsity team was more like a junior varsity team, a squad with sixth- and seventh-graders on it, taking on a varsity schedule.

This season, First Baptist had a winning record heading into its postseason tournament.

“Some teams have one really good player, and that player can do everything. We don’t have that,” Ballance said.

“It’s taught me a lot, not just about my game, but about seeing everyone on a team and working as a team,” Ballance said.
