Kevin Robinson, 17, is leaning toward a career in computer engineering.

The football player loves math and building things. His best subject is advanced placement calculus.

However, the well-rounded King’s Fork High School student also works part-time at a Subway restaurant and spent the summer volunteering at Sentara Obici Hospital.

“A lot goes on in a hospital,” Robinson said, adding that he helped in several different areas of the facility. Sometimes he assisted patients, and other times he served food or aided in the surgical department.

“You should be able to help people without any acknowledgement or awards for it,” Robinson said. “Just out of the kindness of your heart.”

It is that attitude that likely will take Robinson far in life, even in a straight-laced career like computer engineering.

“I love computers,” Robinson said. “My mom always asks for help with something.”

Robinson especially likes smaller types of computers, such as cell phones, but says “it would not matter” what kind he eventually worked with.

“I like making things. I like building things,” Robinson said, though he is so busy with extracurricular activities that he hasn’t yet had time to build his own computer.

Robinson’s grade point average is about 3.56, but he doesn’t stop there. In addition to his paid and volunteer jobs and football, Robinson is a member of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, and he also sings in the youth choir at Christian Home Baptist Church.

He even finds time to laugh and make others laugh.

“I’m a very humorous person,” Robinson said, adding that he can “sit around and joke all day” with his 14-year-old sister.

“I just like laughing, because I hate seeing people in a bad mood,” Robinson said.

That quest for happiness translates into his goals for his adult life.

“I just want to be happy when I grow up,” Robinson said. “Like I can look myself in the mirror and be proud of who I am.”

Robinson is the son of Artistine and Kevin Robinson, and has a younger sister and older brother.
