Georgetown is in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament for the first time in 17 years. The Lady Hoyas are a No. 5 seed and will face No. 12 Marist in Berkeley, Ca. on Saturday at 8:21 p.m.

Freshman guard TaShauna “Sugar” Rodgers (King’s Fork) was the Big East Rookie of the Year and Georgetown’s first freshman to be named First Team All-Big East. Rodgers is averaging 18.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. Rodgers set a school record for three-pointers made in a season and is shooting 34.5 percent from three-point range.

The Lady Hoyas (25-6) are in the same regional with No. 1-seed Tennessee, No. 2 Duke and No. 4 Baylor.

Marist (26-7) is the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion and the Lady Red Foxes are making their fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Marist reached the Sweet 16, upsetting No. 4-seed Ohio St. along the way, in the 2007 NCAA Tournament and won a game in the 2008 tournament.

South Carolina St. came within one more win of reaching the NCAA Tournament this past weekend. As the No. 8 seed in the MEAC Tournament in Winston-Salem, N.C., SCSU won three games before falling 57-47 in the final to No. 2 Hampton.

SCSU, 14-18 overall this season, won six games in 2008-09. Freshman guard Trinese Fox (Nansemond River) started 23 games for the Lady Bulldogs, averaging 3.0 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.

Penn State-DuBois freshman David Hommell (King’s Fork) completed his first collegiate wrestling season and Penn St.-DuBois’ inaugural year as a wrestling program in the NCWA (National Collegiate Wrestling Association) National Wrestling Championships in Hampton last Thursday and Friday.

Hommell went 2-2 at the national championships in the 133-pound division. Hommell lost to Apprentice’s Marcus Chevres, won with a pin (3:45) against Rensselaer’s Erez Arnon, won 6-2 over VMI’s Zach Bontrager and lost 3-2 to Adam Bastow of Grand Valley St.

Hommell was one of six Nittany Lion wrestlers to reach the NCWA National Championships. Penn St.-DuBois finished 16th as a team (Div. II).

Chowan’s softball team went 5-0 and outscored its five opponents 68-5 on Friday and Saturday in the CIAA Round Up in Raleigh, N.C.

Junior outfielder Mindy Byrd (King’s Fork) went 11-for-13 at the plate with 11 runs, 11 RBI, two home runs, two doubles and three stolen bases for Chowan (12-15, 6-0 CIAA).

Virginia Military improved to 14-1 on its baseball campaign by sweeping four games against LaSalle Thursday-Sunday in Lexington.

Junior catcher/designated hitter Justin Topping (Nansemond River) is hitting .290 with seven RBI.

Freshman infielder Ombri Rivers (Nansemond River) has played in 10 games for the Keydets and is hitting .412 with 10 runs, two doubles and three stolen bases.

Marshall’s baseball team went 2-1 in Knoxville, Tenn. this weekend. The Thundering Herd (7-6) beat Connecticut 11-8 and Ohio State 17-1 on Saturday before losing 13-8 to Tennessee Sunday.

In the Connecticut game, freshman Isaac Ballou (Nansemond-Suffolk) went 2-for-4 with two runs, his third triple of the season and his sixth stolen base of the season. Ballou is playing center field and hitting leadoff for Marshall.
