ODU falls short of second upset

Old Dominion fought back from an early 14-point deficit to take the lead in the second half, but the No. 11-seed Monarchs lost to No. 3 Baylor 76-68 in the second round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Saturday night in New Orleans.

Baylor led 27-13 with eight minutes to play in the first half and still led 38-28 at halftime. ODU scored the first nine points of the second half and eventually moved ahead, 49-47, with 12:31 remaining.

It remained tight until the final couple minutes. ODU led 58-56 before a 14-4 Baylor run proved decisive.

Redshirt-freshman Nick Wright (Nansemond River) didn’t play for Old Dominion. Wright averaged 1.4 points and 1.2 rebounds per game this season.

ODU (27-9) finishes the season as regular-season and tournament champs of the CAA. This was ODU’s first appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament since 1995.

In the first round of the NCAA Women’s Tournament Saturday night, No. 5-seed Georgetown (26-6) beat No. 12 Marist 62-42 in Berkeley, Ca.

The Lady Hoyas led 25-23 at halftime. Georgetown blitzed the Lady Red Foxes with a 13-0 run in the first 3:20 of the second half. Included in the run was a three-pointer by freshman TaShauna “Sugar” Rodgers (King’s Fork).

Rodgers had one of the toughest offensive games she’s had in her young Lady Hoya career, finishing with 3-for-13 shooting and eight points. Rodgers added six rebounds and a steal.

Georgetown will face No. 4-seed Baylor in the second round Monday in Berkeley.
