The U.S. under-17 national field hockey team defeated Chile 7-1 Saturday to win the bronze medal in the 2010 Pan American Youth Championship in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Earlier this week in the group play round, Chile defeated the United States 2-0.

The U.S. scored in the eighth minute and again in the 14th minute. By halftime, the U.S. led 4-0.

Lakeland junior Kelsey Smither started Saturday’s match as a back. Smither started all five matches in the tournament for the U.S.

The U.S. finished the trip to Uruguay with a 3-2 record.
