Sam Rapoport scored five goals and Will Crenshaw scored four times as Nansemond-Suffolk’s boys lacrosse team rebounded from a season-opening loss last Friday in a major way, a 19-5 victory at home Tuesday night over First Flight (N.C.).

The first few minutes of the match weren’t as easy for the Saints as the final margin wound up being.

The Saints were first on the board with Tucker Hotte scoring off an assist by Crenshaw 1:25 in. First Flight got the next two tallies though, with the two goals coming only eight seconds apart.

Quickly behind, the Saints woke up. In the last 19 minutes of the first half, the Saints scored 11 goals out of 17 shots on goal. NSA’s huge run made it 12-3 at halftime.

“I’m happy that we bounced back because we didn’t play terribly well Friday in Williamsburg,” NSA head coach Tim Hostutler said. “We caught and threw pretty well tonight, and as a result, we won.”

Crenshaw tied the score with 7:03 left in the first period. A penalty on First Flight on the ensuing faceoff battle gave NSA its first man-up chance of the game. Six seconds into the man-up penalty, Rapoport received a pass from Hotte, had time to turn and face goal from a few yards away, and made scoring look simple.

Crenshaw scored with a long shot, picking out the low, right corner of the cage to beat First Flight’s keeper, with 3:41 left in the first period. Crenshaw, who’s headed to Jacksonville University’s lacrosse program next school year, scored again at the 1:41 mark to make it 5-2 NSA.

Rapoport and Reid Mizelle scored two goals apiece through the remainder of the half. Midfielders Bobby Lamm and Zack Crytzer scored once each in the second period.

Rapoport, Crenshaw and Mizelle teamed up for the prettiest attack of NSA’s night.

In the first minute of the second period, all six Saints on the attack got to touch the ball, but the play wound up with Rapoport passing across the back of the cage to Crenshaw and Crenshaw quickly finding Mizelle as he cut across the face of the goal for an even quicker shot.

“We’re putting in a new offense, and between the weather and spring break, I guess you could say we’re having to take time to adjust,” Hostutler said. “We saw flashes of it tonight. Hopefully this offense will become useful for us for the rest of the season.”

Mizelle finished with three goals and three assists. Hotte had two goals and three assists. Nick Leverone, Josh Todd and Bobby Wentz scored a goal each in the second half.

NSA outshot First Flight 40-19 and 30-9 in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper C.J. White played a bit more than three quarters and finished with four saves.

The Saints (1-1) have their first Tidewater Conference game of the season Thursday at Hampton Roads at 4:30 p.m.
