Virginia Military’s baseball squad improved to 23-5 (7-2 Big South) with a three-game sweep this weekend at Big South opponent UNC-Asheville.

Freshman utility player Ombri Rivers (Nansemond River) started in center field in VMI’s 7-5 win Friday to open the series. Rivers was 2-for-5 at the plate with a double and two RBI. Junior Justin Topping (Nansemond River) started at catcher in VMI’s 7-2 win as part of Saturday’s doubleheader. The Keydets won the third game 2-1.

For the season, Rivers is hitting .370 with four doubles, four stolen bases and a 1.000 fielding percentage while seeing time in the outfield and at shortstop. Topping’s hitting .260 with nine RBI. Freshman Erickson Keeton (Nansemond River) is hitting .263.

VMI hosts Longwood Tuesday and James Madison Wednesday.

Charlotte freshman Lindsey Holloman (King’s Fork) started both games at third base Saturday as the 49ers swept Atlantic 10 foe Dayton, 6-1 and 8-0, in Charlotte.

Holloman combined to go 4-for-6 with one run and one RBI in the twinbill, raising her season stats to a .200 batting average and five RBI in 18 games (15 starts).

Charlotte (23-6, 4-0) played two against visiting Furman Monday and is set to host a doubleheader with Appalachian State Tuesday.

A former Nansemond River tennis, basketball and volleyball standout helped set a pair of new Virginia Wesleyan track records Saturday at the 45th Annual Colonial Relays in Williamsburg.

Senior Jason Taylor (Nansemond River) helped the Marlins set school records in the 4×400 and 4×800-meter relays. The new 4×400 time, 3:26.17, beat the old mark by 3.58 seconds. VWC’s 4×800 time was 7:58.56.

VMI junior James Alexander (King’s Fork) finished second in the 200-meter dash (21.44) and third in the 100 (10.71) Saturday at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational in Lynchburg. Both times qualified Alexander for the IC4A National Championships.
