Sophomore Kyle Moore pitched a gem for Nansemond River’s baseball squad Tuesday evening at Grassfield, but Grizzly senior Cody Cox was even better as the Grizzlies won the Southeastern District game 1-0.

The outcome wasn’t any better for the Lady Warriors on Grassfield’s softball diamond as Grassfield’s Lindsey Inzana pitched her team to a 7-1 win.

Moore struggled through the first two innings, but kept the Warriors right in the game. In the Grassfield first, Moore walked three batters before getting a strikeout to end the frame.

In the second, a leadoff single and one-out walk put Moore and the Warriors in trouble. Moore got a fly out for the second out. Shortstop Brandon Lowe couldn’t field a grounder and the error allowed the Grizzlies to get on the board.

The Warrior defense behind Moore did its share to help though. In the fifth, after a leadoff walk and the Grizzly runner stealing second and moving to third on a balk with one out, Lowe made a diving stop toward third, held the runner, and made the play at first.

The next Grassfield hitter sent a drive to deep left-center field only for center fielder Ryan O’Hara to make a full-speed, all-out diving catch to keep the score 1-0.

NR’s best chance to score was the third inning. After Cox struck out the first two Warrior hitters, an error and two singles loaded the bases. Moore, in the clean-up spot in NR’s order, lined out to right-center field for the third out.

Cox, who’s committed to Old Dominion, held NR to three hits and no walks while striking out 15. Cox retired the last 13 Warriors in order.

“Old Dominion’s got a really good pitcher heading their way,” said NR head coach Mark Stuffel.

“Kyle pitched an excellent game tonight and our defense did the job. Yeah, (Grassfield’s) only run came on the error, but Brandon’s been so good for us all year. That’s just the way it goes,” Stuffel said.

Moore allowed three hits and five walks while striking out 10. Vann was 2-for-3 at the plate.

The Warriors (4-6, 3-5) went 1-1, with another loss in a scrimmage, during their spring break trip to Hanahan, S.C. NR faced good competition and excellent pitchers during the trip said Stuffel.

“With our team being so young it helps us figure out what we have to do against pitchers with that type of velocity,” Stuffel said.

The Lady Warriors got the lead in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Sydney Glover walked and scored when Anna Cain’s single to right field led to a Grassfield error.

Grassfield knotted the game in the second and had the chance to add more in the third, loading the bases with no outs. Instead, NR got out of the jam with third baseman Hope Mounie fielding a grounder and throwing home for one out, then a rare shortstop-to-home-to-first double play to suddenly end the inning.

It was Alex Keiser at shortstop starting the play. NR head coach Tim Tarafas had the infield pulled in some, but not all the way.

“Alex has such a strong arm and quick release, we could’ve had her back at the grass and she still would’ve made the play at home,” Tarafas said.

After escaping with the score still tied, NR loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth, but this time Grassfield kept NR scoreless. Grassfield went on to score one run in the fourth and five runs in the fifth.

Cain was 3-for-3 with three singles for the Lady Warriors.

The Lady Warriors (3-5, 3-5) and Warriors host Deep Creek on Friday afternoon.
