VMI upsets No. 1 Virginia

Virginia Military upset and routed No. 1 Virginia 12-3 Wednesday night in Lexington in the first-ever contest of two nationally-ranked baseball teams at VMI’s Gray-Minor Stadium.

The No. 26 Keydets (29-5) took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning and kept building their lead from there. It is VMI’s first win over a top-ranked team.

Junior Justin Topping (Nansemond River) was the designated hitter in VMI’s order and finished the night 1-for-5 with a run.

The Keydets have a three-game Big South series at Liberty Friday through Sunday.

Radford senior Tyren Rivers had four stolen bases, three hits and his fourth home run of the season Wednesday in the Highlanders’ 8-2 win over Longwood Wednesday at Radford.

Rivers, the center fielder and leadoff hitter for the Highlanders, tied the single-game school record with the four stolen bases. For the season, Rivers is hitting .321 with nine doubles, 28 runs, 16 stolen bases and only one error for a .988 fielding percentage.

Radford is 15-16 overall and 4-5 in the Big South.
