For the second year in a row, Lakeland alum Kelsey Cutchins was named James Madison University’s Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Monday night at JMU’s annual student-athlete awards banquet.

Cutchins, an athletic and academic All-American goalkeeper for JMU’s field hockey team, finished her JMU field hockey career in the fall. Cutchins is a psychology major and geography minor.

On the field, Cutchins was selected to the Colonial Athletic Association’s Silver Anniversary Team as one of the top 25 players in the conference’s 25-year history. Cutchins was CAA Player of the Year twice a three-time All-CAA and All-Region goalie and was All-American twice.

James Madison reached the NCAA Tournament three times, won the CAA Tournament three times and the CAA regular season championship once during Cutchins’ career.

In 2009, she ranked fifth nationally with a .796 save percentage. JMU finished the season 12-8 and with a No. 11 national ranking.

For her career, Cutchins is No. 35 in NCAA Div. I history with a 1.10 goals against average. She holds the JMU program record for minutes played in goal.

In addition to her JMU Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, Cutchins is a two-time CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors Association)/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, a three-time CAA Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete and was the 2008-09 CAA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
