R. Scott Carr of Suffolk has earned the 2010 Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy. He was nominated for the award by Paul D. Camp Community College. The award was given at a luncheon ceremony at the Country Club of Virginia on Tuesday, April 20.

Carr is the managing director of investments, leading the Carr Investment Group of Wells Fargo Advisors in the Suffolk office, which he established. He has more than 10 years of experience in capital markets and has hosted educational workshops for individuals and corporations; volunteered as an instructor at PDCCC and at local elementary schools; and spoken at Wells Fargo Advisors training programs. In addition, Carr is a PIM portfolio manager and member of the firm’s prestigious Premier Advisors Program in recognition of his production and outstanding client service.

He has committed one of the largest gifts from a board member to PDCCC’s first Major Gifts Campaign, according to Dr. Patsy Joyner, vice president for institutional advancement and executive director/secretary for the Foundation Board. Carr also is a regular contributor to the Foundation’s annual fund and golf tournament fundraisers.

“During his tenure, he has provided youth, energy and motivation – taking the lead in fund-raising efforts,” Joyner said. “His contributions also include providing wise counsel and direction on investment matters and chairing the Foundation’s Major Gifts Campaign management committee.”

Carr has been featured in Hampton Roads magazine as one of “The Top 40 business People Under 40,” and by Virginia Business magazine as one of the “Top 50 Wealth Managers” in the state.

He has served as president of the Windsor Ruritan Club; member of the Planned Giving Committee at Hampden-Sydney College, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Managerial Economics; and board member of the Suffolk Rotary Club. He also has served as finance chairman of the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts Foundation. In addition, Carr is a founding member and treasurer of the Suffolk Foundation and serves on the Board of Trustees for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy.

He and his wife, Heather, have three children, Hope, Miller and Hattie Belle.

The Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy is hosted by the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education to honor the leading philanthropists from each of Virginia’s 23 community colleges, as well as the system’s statewide foundation. This marks the fifth year the awards have been given.

This year’s class of distinguished philanthropy leaders has contributed a combined total of $10 million to Virginia’s Community Colleges.

“These distinguished individuals are sharing with us their secrets to creating the opportunities of tomorrow. From their hearts, from their hands, from their experiences, they give of themselves. Along the way, they are elevating people’s lives by affording them hope and the opportunity of higher education. And we can never say thank you enough,” said Glenn DuBois, chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges.

Each of the award recipients will have a scholarship named after them and awarded next fall to a student attending their community college. The scholarships are funded largely by the Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation.
