A Suffolk man received a 19-year active sentence in court Thursday for a burglary and sexual assault that occurred in January 2009.

Anthony Lamont Harris, 38, received a total sentence of 41 years, with 22 years suspended, for charges of attempted sodomy, burglary, abduction and assault and battery.

On the night of Jan. 20, 2009, a man who lived in the 1000 block of Cogic Square said he had been watching television when he fell asleep. He woke up around 11 p.m. with Harris on top of him. He fought with Harris, but thought it was a dream and fell back asleep when Harris left the room, prosecutor Marie Walls said.

Harris then entered the room of a 17-year-old female in the same home and tried to sexually assault her. When she screamed, the male victim realized he had not been dreaming, came into the girl’s room and fought with Harris again, causing him to flee the home.

Harris admitted he had been using drugs for some time, Walls said. He said he had been lacing his marijuana with formaldehyde and cocaine, and also drank alcohol, including moonshine, frequently.

Judge Westbrook J. Parker said a particular statement in Harris’ pre-sentence report troubled him: “Mr. Harris is at high risk for new sex offenses, but also substance abuse, criminal behavior, violating the rules of probation, and for emotionally injuring people because of his lack of empathy and poor moral compass.”
