The Whaleyville village is inviting area residents to come celebrate Whaleyville Community Day today.

The day kicks off with a parade at 9:30 a.m., which lines up at Robertson Elementary School. Anybody interested in being in the parade should be at the school between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m.

Following the parade, a variety of activities for all ages will be available, organizer Tommy Savage said. More than 20 vendors will be on hand selling their wares. Free inflatable rides for children will be available all day long, and entertainment will include gospel songs from New Gospel Temple and Pentecostal Followers of Christ between 11 a.m. and noon. At noon, an Elvis impersonator takes the stage until 12:45 p.m.

Several contests will be held throughout the day for kids, adults and even man’s best friend. Dogs will be able to compete in several divisions, including a licking contest and tail-wagging contest. For humans, a pie-eating contest will be featured.

For those who don’t want to eat competitively, several food vendors will sell such things as hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecue, chicken, sausages, corn dogs and other dishes.

Inside the Whaleyville community building, the Tom Smith Camp of Sons of Confederate Veterans will have a Civil War gun display. The vendors’ tent will offer a place for vendors to sell antiques, hanging baskets, cookbooks and more.
