A 5-year-old boy jumped from a moving vehicle on his way home from school Friday, but is expected to survive his injuries, according to authorities.

The rescue squad received the call just after 4 p.m. to go to North 9th Street. They took the boy, Xzaviyair Watson, to the hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries, according to Suffolk spokeswoman Debbie George.

Xzaviyair had been dropped off at the bus stop and was in the passenger seat of a vehicle on his way home when he opened the door to get out before the vehicle stopped moving, according to Bessie Key, a neighbor who made the emergency call.

“He must’ve just been anxious to get home,” said his grandfather, Allen Watson.

Key said she did not see the accident, but “I came outside when I heard him holler,” Key said. “It just about scared me to death.”

At the scene, Margaret Newby, Xzaviyair’s grandmother, said the family was concerned the injuries could aggravate scars from previous surgeries. Xzaviyair has had several surgeries because of an illness he had at birth.

“He had bruises on his arms, legs and chest,” Watson said.

Key said Xzaviyair got up and walked after the accident.

“But he’s been sick off and on,” Watson said. “When something like that happens, you just don’t take any chances.”
