Ruritans plan big celebration

Ruritans and friends from near and far will converge on the village of Holland next weekend to celebrate the service organization’s 82nd anniversary.

“It’s the biggest celebration of Ruritan all year,” said Donald Worrell, last year’s Ruritan National President and a member of Holland Ruritan Club. “It’s once a year that the leaders and Ruritans come together to celebrate the birth of the organization.”

The event will feature a parade, musical entertainment, a barbecue cook-off, a cornhole tournament and more, including children’s activities and bounce houses.

This is the 30th anniversary of the Founders’ Day event. The cornhole tournament is new this year, Worrell said.

“Each year, it seems to get a little bigger,” he said.

The parade will kick off in the morning, followed by the barbecue cook-off from noon to 2 p.m. Musical entertainment will take the stage during the cook-off. Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the gate, and may be purchased by calling 657-6425.

The cornhole tournament begins at noon, and registration ends at 11 a.m. Teams will be chosen by blind draw, and the tournament will be played by double elimination. Trophies are awarded to the first and second place teams. It is limited to 40 teams, so sign up early. The cornhole tournament is $20 to enter and get a barbecue ticket, or $10 for cornhole only. Spectators for the cornhole tournament will pay $2 admission.

Several vendors and organizations will have product sales and informational booths in the town square. In addition, sports teams will play throughout the day. Fireworks, however, will not be held this year.

The evening will end with a banquet at the Holland Community House for those who are pre-registered.

Worrell hopes for a large turnout for the event, no matter what the weather forecast shows.

“This is where it all started,” he said.
