A Suffolk man died early Tuesday morning after being ejected from his vehicle during an accident at the Tidewater Drive on-ramp to westbound I-64 in Norfolk.

Rodney Quintel Drayton, 45, of the 100 block of Robertson Street in Suffolk, lost control of his 1999 Ford Expedition after entering the interstate from Tidewater Drive at a high rate of speed, according to Sgt. Michelle Cotten, a Virginia State Police spokesperson.

As he entered the flow of traffic, Drayton’s Expedition sideswiped a 2006 Sterling tractor-trailer and wound up underneath the truck, Cotten said in a press release. The tractor-trailer ran over the front end of the Expedition, ejecting Drayton, who was not wearing a seat belt.

Drayton died at the scene, Cotten stated. Weather and speed were both said to be factors in the accident.
