Texting leads to wreck

A woman who said she was attempting to send a text message while she was driving struck a guardrail and a residence on Holland Road on Wednesday.

Kelly Eileen Termeer, of Old Princess Anne Road in Virginia Beach, was traveling eastbound in the 4300 block of Holland Road Wednesday evening. Her vehicle left the roadway to the left and struck a guardrail, then veered across the road to the right, striking a ditch and ultimately running into a screened-in porch connected to a residence.

Termeer told police she “was text messaging prior to the crash, and that caused her to leave the roadway,” city spokeswoman Debbie George said.

A state law against sending text messages while driving went into effect last year. George did not have statistics on how many tickets have been issued in Suffolk for the new violation, but she said there likely have not been many of them.

“It’s a very tough code to enforce,” George said.

Termeer was charged with reckless driving and texting while driving. She was taken via Nightingale helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with injuries that are considered non-life-threatening, George said.
