It’s not every golf course where you can eat hot dogs on the green, but there’s a long-loved tradition at the Ebenezer United Methodist Golf Tournament to have them served throughout the game.

Fifty teams are expected to compete in the 11th annual tournament, set for June 3 at the Cedar Point Country Club, with shotgun starts at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

“The event started as a fundraiser to help raise money to buy new choir robes,” said Art Latimer, an organizer of the event. “We made $12,000 that year. Since then, we’ve made up to $50,000 one year.”

The team entry fee is $500 per team and covers an afternoon or morning of golf, the greens fee, carts, balls, hot dogs on the course, snacks, drinks, heavy hors d’oeuvres, the awards ceremony and two door prize tickets per player.

All proceeds go to benefit community-wide events, The Village Senior Center, the Family Life Center and the church’s outreach ministries.

“We always put our money back into the community,” Latimer said. “It goes to help things like the elderly, children’s sports programs and the 4th of July party in North Suffolk.”

A highlight of the games is the helicopter ball drop, when golf balls purchased by individuals are dumped by the bucketful from a helicopter and the owner of the ball that lands closest to the target wins half a pot of money. The remaining funds go to charity.

“We’ve had people win thousands of dollars in years past,” Latimer said.

There also will be live entertainment and a silent auction.
