PDCCC will be busy all summer

With spring semester having culminated with graduation on May 14, summer semester is well under way. Following are two different options that begin in June.

Children’s literature course

Children’s Literature, which can be used for teacher recertification, is scheduled this summer at the Hobbs Suffolk Campus. The three-credit course examines fiction and non-fiction books for all grade levels.

Following an orientation meeting on at 3 p.m. June 25, classes will meet on Wednesdays, June 30 to July 21, from 6 to 9 pm. Kids College 2010

Kids College is a summer enrichment series offering unique workshops for rising second- to twelfth-graders that are designed to teach new skills, develop new interests and hobbies and explore career opportunities.

Kids College 2010 will run weekdays from June 21 through Aug. 13, featuring a variety of classes every week and 35 different classes from which to choose in the following topical areas: career exploration; the arts; hobbies and interests; science; technology; engineering; and math.

PDCCC Showcase winners

Two members of the faculty and two support staff employees will be honored with Showcase Awards at the Fall Virginia Community Colleges Association Conference.

Faculty criteria for selection include excellence in teaching, significant contributions to education and the community college in general; and professional/personal development. Support staff criteria for selection include significant contributions to education and the community college, plus professional and personal development involvement.

Nominated and selected by their peers, those receiving Faculty Showcase Awards include Renee Felts, associate professor of Information Systems Technology; and Ronette Jacobs, instructor of English. Those receiving Support Staff Showcase Awards are Teresa Harrison, M.B.A., financial aid assistant; and Ruth Waldo, CPS, executive to the vice president of Financial and Administrative Services.

Student Ambassadors

Student Ambassadors for 2010-2011 include Ashley Beale of Franklin; Sally Rensch and Mandy Pieart of Carrsville; Emmalia Roi Colendrino and Paul Bryant of Courtland; Brenda Anyanwu of Zuni; and Gloria Herndon and Pamela Kiger of Suffolk.

Nominated by a staff or faculty member, they are selected based on a minimum grade point average of 3.0; demonstration of leadership abilities; communication skills; and positive attitude regarding self, the college and the community.

Serving as representatives of the College, they participate in institutional advancement activities, (fundraisers and visits to the General Assembly) and also assist with special events, such as graduation and career fairs.
