A local organization is gearing up with prayer to God and supplication to area businesses for an end-of-summer bash it hopes will benefit the community in multiple ways.

The Suffolk Summer Slam will bring local Christian worship bands from across Hampton Roads together at Bennett’s Creek Park on Aug. 28 from 2 to 10 p.m. Impact Suffolk expects about 1,500 people to attend the event, which also will feature youth-oriented vendors, college representatives, games and fun.

The price of admission will be a back-to-school supply to be donated to the Salvation Army’s supply drive, said Win Anderson, an Impact Suffolk volunteer.

“It’s just a really fun day for families and their teens and their friends to come out, have a good time, bless the community with back-to-school supplies, and also hear the gospel of Jesus Christ presented in various forms,” Anderson said.

The event will feature musicians such as Hemotheory, Pursuing the Hero and Raiderz of the Lost, ministries like Invoke Skate Ministry and Virginia Fire Team, and worship bands such as YouthQuest.

“So far, it’s shaping up to be pretty good,” Anderson said.

However, Impact Suffolk is in need of volunteers, sponsors and above all, prayer for the event.

“We need people to get the word out by, first of all, prayerfully considering this whole thing, then going out and just telling people about it,” Anderson said.

The organization needs all kinds of volunteers, from people who can work the event to people who simply will spread the word to everyone they meet. Business owners can help by giving gifts for door prizes or other sponsorship opportunities.

“You can get involved by just coming and bringing a back-to-school supply, hanging out and enjoying the music all day long,” Anderson said. “Or, you can be a little more proactive by sponsoring a booth space and giving a gift.”

The organization also needs to get a “really incredible sound system” for the day, Anderson said — either by getting enough donations to rent one or by getting one free.

So far, the event’s Facebook fan page has 149 friends, and Anderson hopes for even more to sign on.

“It’s pretty exciting,” he said. “What seemed to be this monstrous task is all of a sudden moving along so great.”

Volunteers who have signed up have come not only from Impact Suffolk, but also just “community minded people,” Anderson said.

“That’s really very cool,” he said.
