The 28th annual Churchland and Portsmouth Rotary Clubs barbecue is only two weeks away, and organizers are encouraging attendees to get their tickets early.

“It’s all-you-can-eat food and beverages,” said Bill Pollard, a Rotary member. “I would imagine, if it’s a nice day, we’d get a few thousand people there.”

The barbecue will be held June 16 from 3 to 9:30 p.m. at the old TCC campus on College Drive in Suffolk. Food will be served from 4 to 7 p.m., and entertainment by Bill Deal’s Rhondels will be from 6 to 9:30 p.m. The menu includes barbecue, chicken, beans, cole slaw and drinks. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the gate.

“It’s a good networking outing in northern Suffolk, and it goes to a good cause,” Pollard said. “It might vary each year depending on what the needs are in the community, but all the proceeds are used to support local organizations and projects.”

Proceeds from the barbecue typically support scholarships for high school students, literacy programs, and other nonprofits such as Edmarc Hospice for Children and the H.E.R. Shelter.

Each year’s barbecue nets a profit of about $20,000 for the area organizations, Pollard said.

“People know about it,” he said. “It’s been going on for 28 years. Even though the college has moved, they’ve been great to work with.”
