Residents and visitors in the Holland Road area of Suffolk can expect to see road work connected to the CenterPoint Intermodal Center beginning this summer.

Less visible progress on the 930-acre distribution and transportation hub has been ongoing for some time, said Neil Doyle, executive vice president of CenterPoint Properties.

“There’s been kind of methodical progress over the last year,” Doyle said. “There’s been quite a bit of work out there.”

CenterPoint Properties, an Illinois-based developer, plans an intermodal center including 13 buildings, 5.8 million square feet of light and heavy industrial, distribution, office space and general commercial facilities, as well as a rail yard adjacent to the CSX rail line.

Doyle said a major part of the work — grading of the roadway — likely will begin this year.

“We’re trying to be real sensitive to the marketplace and try to time it right,” Doyle said of finding tenants for the buildings. “We’re out there marketing the best we can. Hopefully, as the economy turns, we’ll see some action.”

The company is requesting bids for site work and construction on Web sites such as BidClerk.com. On Wednesday, some work was already in progress at the Kenyon Road entrance to the site, across from the Paul D. Camp Community College campus.

“It’s a big park,” Doyle said. “It takes a little time to get going, but it will be there for many years. We’re getting there. We’re confident.”
