A Suffolk man was injured in a North Carolina plane crash Monday that killed his flying companion.

Joseph S. Konicki, of Suffolk, suffered injuries in the crash. William Thomas Jordan, of Edenton, N.C., died from his injuries.

According to a press release from Chowan County Sheriff Dwayne Goodwin, emergency personnel responded about 7:30 p.m. to a call of a Beechcraft 60 that crashed in a wooded area northwest of the Northeastern Regional Airport in Edenton. The plane went down between a runway and Soundside Road, Goodwin said.

Jordan was an experienced pilot, with more than 40,000 hours of flight experience, Goodwin said. Konicki also is a pilot, and the plane is registered to him. Records show the plane is a 1968 fixed-wing, multi-engine model.

The plane had just departed the airport when it suddenly crashed, said Kathleen Bergin, spokeswoman with the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.

Konicki was listed in good condition at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital on Wednesday afternoon, according to a hospital spokeswoman. A message left at a Suffolk number listed for him was not returned Wednesday.
