Suffolk residents will kick healthy living into high gear this weekend.

“Suffolk on the Move,” an initiative of the Suffolk Partnership for a Healthy Community, in partnership with the Suffolk Parks and Recreation Department, will kick off with a 5K walk/run and one-mile fun run on June 26 at Constant’s Wharf. The event will begin a yearlong campaign intended to get Suffolk residents more active.

“It’s a fun activity for friends and family to get out and do together,” Suffolk Partnership for a Healthy Community President Caroline Martin said. “Suffolk on the Move gives us a better understanding of the different ways to stay fit — from taking stairs instead of the elevator, weeding in the garden — and this is an opportunity for the community to come together for some fun and activity.”

Onsite registration begins at 7 a.m. The 5k begins at 8 a.m. with the one-mile walkers in hot pursuit at 8:15 p.m.

“This kickoff is intended to reach all citizens of Suffolk,” Martin said. “Whether you want to run the 5k or want push a stroller, take your kids or just can’t do the 5k you have the one-mile fun run.”

The event already has nearly 380 registrants signed up, and organizers estimate there could be as many as 500 participating on Saturday.

“We’re so excited about the response we’ve had from the community,” Martin said. “I think it speaks to the growing awareness of what has become a crisis situation. I think folks have come together and realized what our lifestyle decisions have done to us.”

Following the run, the Parks and Recreation Department will hold “Fun Fest” to kick off the month of July, which is National Recreation and Parks Month.

From 10 a.m. to noon at Constant’s Wharf Park and Marina there will be a magician, bounce house, canoe rides, giveaways and games.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Participants are asked to donate one canned good to support Suffolk Food pantries.

Wheelchairs, strollers and wagons are permitted on the one-mile walk.
