MMA fighter compete in Gladiator event

Two Suffolk mixed martial arts fighters will be competing locally at Modern Gladiators 11: Freedom Fighters on Saturday, July 3 in Chesapeake.

Lakeland graduates Cody Smith (2004) and Kenny Wright (’06) will be competing to uphold their undefeated records in the cage.

Smith holds the Modern Gladiator Light Heavyweight (205 pounds) title. This will be Smith’s last title defense before making his move into the pro circuit.

Smith is 4-0 with three submissions and one knockout. At 6-foot-5, Smith has a stand-up style with strong wrestling and solid Jiu-Jitsu skills.

Wright is a teammate and longtime friend with Smith as both train out of Bushido MMA in Portsmouth.

Wright will be fighting for the second time after winning his debut fight in the middleweight division (185 pounds). Wright’s a well-rounded fighter who looks to exploit his opponent’s weaknesses whether it be standing or on the ground.

Both fighters are coached by Muay Thai coach Greg Smith, Jiu-Jitsu coach Alan Merullo and boxing coach “Dangerous Dorin Spivey, the current NABA Lightweight Champion. Smith and Wright are blue belts in Saulo Riebeiro Jiu-Jitsu.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the action starts at 7 p.m. at the Khedive Shriners Activities Center on Woodlake Drive. Concessions will be available by A.J. Gators Sports Bar and Restaurant.
