Former Nansemond-Suffolk standout Matt Hamlet is playing second base this summer for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in the Cape Cod Baseball League.

Hamlet, a rising senior at Boston College, has played in 11 games so far with Yarmouth-Dennis, hitting .167.

The Cape Cod Baseball League’s a wood bat summer league that draws elite returning collegiate players from around the country. In 2009, 234 players who played at some point in the Cape Cod League were drafted by MLB teams. In the 2009 season, 217 former Cape Cod players were on major-league rosters.

The Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox have won three league titles in the last six summers.

This spring for BC, Hamlet played second base and normally hit second in the Eagle order, hitting .291 with 45 runs, 13 doubles, 36 RBI and 26 sacrifices.

Matt Davenport (Nansemond-Suffolk) is still posting excellent stats pitching with the Peninsula Pilots in the Coastal Plain League. Davenport, a rising junior at William and Mary, is 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA. He’s recorded 26 strikeouts in 31.2 innings pitched.

The Pilots have home games upcoming on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday with each game starting at 7:05 p.m.

Lakeland grad Robert Hedrick is pitching well for the Southern Illinois Miners as the Miners (32-4) are in the midst of a 20-game winning streak in the Frontier League, an independent minor league.

Hedrick had scoreless relief outings on Saturday and Monday. Hedrick has pitched in 13 games, all as a reliever, going 1-0 with 12 strikeouts in 21.1 innings. Hedrick’s in his second season with a Frontier League club.
