With Fourth of July fast approaching, the best American food to be found in the state — according to online voters — is located in Suffolk’s back yard.

The Vintage Tavern, located at 1900 Governor’s Pointe Drive, was one of the top 50 restaurants named in the 2010 Diner’s Choice Awards for Best American Restaurant. It was the only restaurant in the commonwealth to be honored.

“We’re thrilled to have been included as one of the Top 50 American restaurants again this year,” Cindy McGann, partner at M&M Hospitality, said in a press release. “We take such great pride in preparing dishes that highlight our local cuisine and seasonal specialties, and this honor underscores that effort in concert with our commitment to wonderful Southern hospitality.”

The awards are handed out by OpenTable.com, which serves as an online restaurant reservation website. Winners are selected based on feedback from OpenTable diners who used an online service to make their dinner reservation. After their visit, customers are asked to rate the restaurant on several different factors, from food to ambiance.

More than 11,000 restaurants across the country were featured on the website and were in the running for different categories including Best American, Best Food, Best Overall and many others.

This is the second year Vintage Tavern has been selected for the award.

“Vintage Tavern prides itself on its Southern recipes, using local flair and its Southern hospitality,” said Robin Magrisi, who does public relations for the restaurant. “People have said things like ‘I didn’t know who my waiter was’ because everyone is willing to help them with anything they need. It’s true Southern hospitality — American dining at its finest.”
