Independence Day revelers, now matter where they live in Suffolk, will have plenty of opportunities to celebrate the nation’s 234th birthday Sunday. But, residents are reminded that putting on their own fireworks display is prohibited.

The festivities begin in North Suffolk with worship at Ebenezer United Methodist Church’s family life center, 1589 Steeple Drive, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Opening ceremonies for the events begin at 11 a.m. in the family life center, and will last until 11:30 a.m.

A bicycle and float parade will be held throughout Eclipse beginning at 11:30 a.m., with staging on the soccer field beside the church. Helmets are required for bicycle riders in the parade. Free rides and games will be held on the soccer fields from noon to 3 p.m., and concessions will be sold in the family life center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

At 3 p.m., the famous raft race on Chuckatuck Creek begins. After the race, food sales begin again at the church at 6 p.m., and music by The Last Exit and Nate Sparks will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m., when the fireworks round out the evening.

In the downtown area, Suffolk Christian Church on North Main Street will hold a special picnic and celebration to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the church, as well as Independence Day. Food, fun and games for all ages will be available immediately following the 11 a.m. worship service.

Also in the downtown area, the Suffolk Parks and Recreation Department will hold the “Stars and Stripes Spectacular” at Constant’s Wharf, 100 E. Constance Road, from 5 to 9 p.m. Local favorite band Island Boy and FAME participants will provide the entertainment. Other activities include a magician, bounce houses, food vendors and giveaways leading up to fireworks beginning at 9 p.m.

Starting at 4 p.m., one lane in each direction on East Constance Road will be closed to accommodate parking for event attendees. Those attending are encouraged to bring their own chair or blanket. The Stars and Stripes Spectacular is sponsored by Ryan Marine, Inc. and Local Edge.
