Suffolk Police have captured a suspect in connection with a Sunday morning abduction that began in Portsmouth and ended oddly in Whaleyville.

William Elwin Boyd, 23, of Portsmouth, was taken into custody Sunday afternoon and charged with two counts of abduction, one count of rape, one count of sodomy, four counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Boyd also has an outstanding warrant on file in North Carolina for probation violation.

According to a press release, police began searching for Boyd Sunday, after he allegedly abducted two woman at gunpoint in Portsmouth, forcing them to drive to Suffolk.

The abduction incident ended around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, when the vehicle collided with a power pole on Whaleyville Boulevard.

After the wreck, Boyd reportedly fled the scene. Police believed Boyd was possibly injured and armed.

Local police were aided in the search by officers from Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Hampton and Virginia State Police on the ground and in the air.

Police alerted area residents through Reverse 911, the city’s cable channel and social media sites.

Boyd was captured when a Virginia State Trooper spotted Boyd running back into the woods in the 5000 block of Whaleyville Boulevard. A bloodhound and its handler from Hampton Police were able to quickly track and arrest Boyd shortly after 1 p.m.

In an update from police late Sunday, one of the victims had been treated and released from Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, while the second victim was still being treated. Boyd also was still being treated for injuries sustained in the accident.
