Nansemond-Suffolk alum Katie Murphy lost 3 and 2 to Lauren Greenlief in the quarterfinals of the 85th VSGA (Virginia State Golf Association) Women’s Amateur Championship Thursday at Glenmore Country Club in Keswick.
Murphy, a rising senior at William and Mary, fell behind by three holes in the first seven holes against Greenlief, a University of Virginia golfer and the two-time reigning Virginias Women’s Stroke Play champion.
After losing No. 7, Murphy won No. 8 with a par four and No. 10 with a par four. One hole down was as close as Murphy got however.
Greenlief won Nos. 12
and 15 to rebuild her insurance.
On Tuesday, Murphy moved through the stroke play qualifying round by shooting a one-under-par 71 to be the No. 3 seed out of the 16 golfers who reached the championship flight of the match play rounds.
