Suffolk’s Preston Leigh finished in a tie for 17th Thursday at the 58th VSGA (Virginia State Golf Association) Junior Amateur Championship at Roanoke Country Club.

Leigh carded scores of 72, 73 and 74 at the par-71 course to finish six-over par.

Leigh, a recent graduate of Greenbrier Christian Academy, was a hole away from finishing with an even-par round to cap his tournament, but he made a triple-bogey seven on No. 18. Leigh birdied two holes Thursday for a total of eight birdies in his 54 holes.

Suffolk’s John David Sanderson finished tied for 67th with rounds of 81, 79 and 76 (23-over par). Eighty-eight players completed all three rounds.

Jake Mondy, a 17-year-old from Blacksburg, won the title by five strokes over Jack Adkins and Bryce Chalkley. Mondy shot 69, 65 and 68 for an 11-under par total. Mondy and Chalkley were co-leaders going into the final round.

During the high school season for GCA, Leigh led the Gators to the Tidewater Conference championship and Virginia Independent Schools Division II state championship, being the medalist in both tournaments.
