Fitness center fills void in North Suffolk

A void left vacant when Premier Fitness closed earlier this year in North Suffolk, will soon be filled when Anytime Fitness opens its second Suffolk location, this time in the Harbour View Shopping Center.

“It’s another service and good quality-of-life business for our citizens up there,” Director of Economic Development Kevin Hughes said. “Godhap4Fitness, which focuses primarily on personal training, opened earlier this month. Anytime Fitness focuses more on general fitness and has personal training available. It’s a good compliment to the area, and will certainly be filling a void.”

The fitness center will be opening their new location next door to Happy Gardens, in the same shopping center as Harris Teeter.

Construction on the 3,200-square-foot facility is scheduled to begin on Monday, and Scott Christensen, who co-owns the franchise with Douglas Christian, said the center is scheduled to open within the next 60 days.

“The growth and the area are exciting,” Christensen said. “We looked at other places in Chesapeake, Virginia Beach and a few places in Suffolk, but the place we thought would be best to build was Harbour View. We’re very excited.”

At Anytime Fitness, members can workout any time of the day or night, every day of the year by using a security-access key to enter the club, even when it is not staffed.

Members have full use of state-of-the-art strength training and cardiovascular equipment and reciprocity among the more than 1,300 clubs.

“We aren’t a big box gym,” Christensen said. “That’s not what we’re about. It’s our goal to be a neighborhood gym. We went with a 3,200-square-foot facility that will have a member to equipment ration that’s better than a bigger gym.”

Anytime Fitness has another location in Suffolk, located on Godwin Boulevard near Sentara Obici Hospital. That location and another Carrolton center are operated by a different owner.
