Murder suspect in custody

Suffolk Police announced late Sunday evening the arrest of 19-year-old Dontaz Wilkerson in connection with a Sunday morning shooting that claimed the life of 18-year-old Tyquan Lewis.

According to a department release, both Lewis and Wilkerson were attending a party in the 100 block of Manning Road when a large fight broke out. Both were believed to have been involved in the fight.

Both left the party after the fight and met up again on Walnut Street where Lewis was shot.

Wilkerson has been charged with one count of first-degree murder, one count use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, one county possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, one count shoot, cut, three counts attempted malicious wounding and one count discharging a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school. Wilkerson is being held without bond at Western Tidewater Regional Jail.

Two additional suspects reported being injured, one was stabbed and the other sustained a laceration when running away. Those injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Lewis was an incoming senior at Lakeland High School and a multi-sport star for the Cavaliers.
