Suffolk Humane to host ‘yappy hours’

Saturday night will belong to the dog lovers and their four-pawed friends this week.

Customers can sip on “muttinis” and “catmopolitans” on the patio with their pups during “yappy hours” at Mosaic Cafe Aug. 14, from 5 to 9 p.m. to help kick off the third annual Mutt Strut.

“More than ever, we need help to take care of the pets that can’t speak for themselves,” said Kay Hurley of the Suffolk Humane Society. “The funds raised on Saturday go to help the Mutt Strut and the Humane Society, to help us put on programs, provide spaying and neutering and run our adoption drives.”

The third annual Mutt Strut benefits the Suffolk Humane Society. Last year the event drew more than 4,000 supporters.

The event is scheduled for Sept. 19, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Sleepy Hole Park.

A pledge walk, demonstrations, pet screenings, microchipping, canine games, rescue groups, pet portraits and food and entertainment all will be on site.

Celebrity servers, live music, a silent auction and special meal prices will also be included during the evening kickoff event at Mosaic.

“We weren’t sure how it was all going to come together, but the support for this has just been huge,” Hurley said.

Celebrity servers will include Delegate Chris Jones, Mayor Linda Johnson and her husband Jesse, country music DJ Joe Hoppel, Mike Duman of Mike Duman Used Car Superstore, WNIS’ Chris Langey and Suffolk Clerk of Courts Randy Carter.

The menu selection will include special meal deals for the night at $15, $20 and $30, which include an appetizer, entrée and dessert.

At the party, Suffolk Humane also will debut its partnership with Fetch A Cure, a Richmond-based organization dedicated to promoting awareness, education and funding for treatment of pets with cancer.

Auction items will include a metal mini-Fetch Pup, jewelry, gift items, an autographed copy of Joe Hoppel’s new book, “50 Years in Country Music: People I’ve Met and Things I’ve Done,” and art by noted glass artist Neil Duman.

All dogs must be well behaved and vaccinated to attend Yappy Hours.
