Bulldog cruises to 65

Breaking records: King's Fork's Adam Peebles watches his second shot on No. 17 at Bide-a-Wee Golf Course in Portsmouth Monday. Peebles hit this shot, an 8-iron, on the green of the par five and made birdie, one of his seven birdies in a 7-under-par round of 65. Peebles broke his own school record, set a week ago at Nansemond River Golf Club, by a stroke.
By crushing long, accurate drives, King’s Fork’s Adam Peebles made short work of Bide-a-Wee Golf Course’s par fives Monday and, for the second time in his three rounds as a Bulldog, set a new King’s Fork’s program record with a 7-under-par 65.
Peebles simply said “it was a solid round” as he birdied seven holes and made pars on the remaining 11. He carded birdies on three of Bide-a-Wee’s four par fives.
With 300-plus-yard drives, he reached or was very close to reaching each green on the par fives in two. The longest club he had for a second shot was a 3-iron.
Peebles made four on the par-five first, a 508-yard hole, and kept going to birdie No. 2 and No. 6, both par fours between 420-430 yards, to shoot 33 on the front nine.
He birdied on the 526-yard par-five 10th, then closed his round on fire with birdies on Nos. 15, 17 and 18. On No. 17, the last par five on the course at 552 yards, Peebles hit driver right down the middle of the fairway and an 8-iron to the water-guarded green to 12 feet from the hole. He narrowly missed the eagle putt.
“I played solid all the way around. Coming in, I was trying to get to a 65, to beat 66,” Peebles said. The sophomore shot 66, 6-under par, in KF’s first match of the season last week at Nansemond River Golf Club.
On No. 18, he rolled in an 18-foot putt for birdie and his 65.
Grassfield defeated the Bulldogs (1-2) 337-375. Colin Mcaleer’s 76 led Grassfield. KF’s next-best scores were from Griffen Saylor’s 97 and Andrew Womack’s 98.
Lakeland (1-2) won its first match of the season, beating Indian River 378-410. The Cavalier team total is the best in the two seasons under coach Brandon Frye.
Ryan Sigler, Lakeland’s No. 1 player, led the way with an 82, just two strokes shy of his personal best in a competitive round.
Sigler came up inches shy of two eagles on the back nine. On No. 15, a 337-yard par four, Sigler drove the green to eight feet from the hole. His eagle putt came to rest barely short, on the lip of the cup.
On No. 17, Sigler hit driver and 6-iron to reach the par five in two. Again, his eagle putt stayed on the lip. Sigler shot 39 on the back nine.
Chris Holland shot 95. Stephen Blanchard shot 98 and Colin Hoy shot 103 to make up the rest of the winning score for the Cavs.
