Police arrest suspect in cold case

Suffolk police arrested a suspect in a 16-year-old murder case Thursday.

James Henry Bullock, 37, of Norfolk, is charged with first-degree murder, robbery, burglary, conspiracy and firearms charges in connection with the murder of Robert Cromer.

According to a city news release, Cromer was shot and killed during a home invasion that took place Feb. 17, 1994 in the 500 block of Ashley Avenue. Several people were in the residence at the time.

The Suffolk Police Department’s Cold Case Unit reopened the case when it received new information on the identity of the suspects, city spokeswoman Debbie George said.

One man already is sitting in the state penitentiary for his role in the crime. Darrin Bondhill pleaded guilty in September 2009 to first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit robbery and attempted robbery.

Bullock was arrested in the Norfolk city jail, where he is being held on an unrelated matter, George said. He is charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of murder, robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of robbery, attempted robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of attempted robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, armed burglary, use of a firearm in the commission of burglary, and shoot, stab, cut or wound.
