Students are back in school, but Suffolk’s School Board has been hard at work all summer.

While the Board has been searching for a new school superintendent and a new school site, there will be minimal discussion of one topic — and no discussion of the other — at Thursday’s board meeting.

There is no discussion scheduled for the superintendent search, according to board chairwoman Lorraine Skeeter.

At the Aug. 19 meeting, Skeeter said the next step in the superintendent selection process would be for members to review the 17 applications they had in their possession and to prepare interview questions to bring to the table at the Sept. 10 meeting.

According to Bethanne Bradshaw, spokeswoman for the schools, the members are expected to call a special meeting later this month to announce a 15-day window during which they will conduct interviews.

Discussion regarding the school site selection will also be limited, unless School Board members decide to discuss it in length.

In the Aug. 19 meeting, they voted to request a meeting with City Council to discuss legal options with the goal to meet before the September meeting. Council members were split on the need to meet with the Board but were unable to meet before the September meeting.

“We don’t know what the next step will be or if anything will be said about it,” Skeeter said. “If a member has something to say or needs information, they’ll bring it up, and we’ll discuss it, but there’s no specific discussion about the site we’ll be doing.”
