First Baptist Christian School might not be the largest school on the block, but it has big plans for its students and the community.

Students are selling Yankee Candle products to help raise funds for school programs, a local charity and a new school building. The last day to order is Wednesday, Sept 22.

“We have candles, car fresheners, candle accessories, wrapping paper — even Christmas gifts,” said Kim Teixeira, activities coordinator. “Our kids are working hard to try and raise money. It’s a great product and goes to fund a great cause.”

Favorite scents include Autumn Fruit, Christmas Cookie, Clean Cotton and Pumpkin Pie. Accessories include votive holders, jar toppers and fall and Christmas decorations. Also for sale are also Christmas “Illuma Lids” with Christmas decorations, holiday gift-wrap and car air fresheners. Prices range from $7 to $23.

Ten percent of the funds raised will be donated to the Suffolk Salvation Army to help fund its new recreation building.

“We believe in tithing and want to give back to the community by giving to an organization that benefits the community,” Teixeira said. “Our goal is to raise $20,000 so we can give $2,000. That would be fabulous.”

For the high school class that raises the most money, five percent of the total funds will be put in the kitty for their senior trip. All remaining funds will go toward programs and purchasing a new school building.

“We are continually expanding our academic programs to give our students the best quality and well-rounded education in the area,” Teixeira said. “We’re expanding our Advanced Placement class and gifted and talented programs.”

The school, which is currently split between two locations, is also working to secure a new building.

“Our goal is for each of our students to raise $100,” Teixeria said. “If we can do that, we’ll be able to make our goals.”
