Nansemond-Suffolk’s boys volleyball team took its winning streak to seven matches Wednesday with a sweep over visiting Bishop Sullivan Catholic, 25-20, 25-23, 25-12.

After winning three matches last season, the Saints (7-1) have every reason to take pride in what they’ve already done says NSA head coach Michele Bossick. At the same time though, the goal of the Tidewater Conference title is still ahead of her Saints.

“It really means nothing because conference play starts next Thursday. It’s fine to be proud of what we’ve done, but the true test starts then,” Bossick said.

NSA’s lone loss, in the opening match of the season, came in five sets against defending conference champion Cape Henry. The Saints start their five conference matches off by hosting Cape Henry.

NSA’s serving made for fairly easy work against the Crusaders. The Saints had a 16-2 margin in aces and the advantage became more obvious as the match progressed.

Six different Saints put down kills in the opening set, led by Wes Edwards with three kills. Tucker Hotte, Harrison Spalding and Bobby Wentz had two kills each.

NSA jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second set, but the Crusaders fought back to tie the set, 16-16.

The Saints had no blocks in the match until Hotte and Spalding scored with blocks on back-to-back points to put NSA up 20-17. Hotte served two aces to give NSA a 23-20 lead.

Bishop Sullivan fought off three NSA set points before Edwards put down a spike for a kill. Edwards led the Saints with nine kills.

Set three was over in a hurry as the Saints moved out to an 18-6 lead.

“Our timing and our defensive coverage is coming together very well,” Bossick said. “We’re starting to read opponents better and make adjustments on the fly.”

“The guys are having fun. They like working together and working each day in practice,” she said.
