The fun isn’t stopping at the Farmers’ Market in downtown Suffolk.

The market will continue to operate through the fall on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., the city announced this week. As always, it will include a variety of local produce, plants and pumpkins.

“Farmers’ markets are about community,” tourism director Lynette White said at the beginning of the season. “They serve as a connection between our local farmers, our residents and our visitors.”

Launched in 2006, the Suffolk Farmers’ Market is an open-air gathering place offering fresh, locally-grown foods, value-added products and hand-crafted goods.

“We still have a major agriculture industry here,” White said, referring to about 1,155 farms that total 59,000 acres of agriculture production. “The farmers’ market is an outlet for some of the local produce that’s grown here.”

Held beneath brightly striped tents at “Market Park,” the mini-park adjacent to the Seaboard Station Railroad Museum at 326 N. Main Street, the market is sponsored in part by the Obici Healthcare Foundation and is managed by the Suffolk Division of Tourism.

Vendors participating in the fall market include Acorn Hill Farms, Adams Seafood, Apron Strings, B&H Produce, Black Silhouettes, Golden Eagle Farm, Growing Green Acres, Hardy Family Farm, Munden Flowers & Jewelry, Noriega Farm, Perry Handbags, Prissy Chix, and Topknot Angora.

The Suffolk market also is participating in the 2010 Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program July 1 through Nov. 15. The program provides coupons for low-income seniors to buy fresh, unprepared foods at farmers’ markets, roadside stands and community-supported agriculture programs.
