COURTLAND — Southampton Academy defeated Tidewater Academy 42-14 on Friday night.

Now 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference, Southampton Academy had a total of 254 yards of total offense compared to the Warriors’ 191 yards.

“It’s just a good win,” said Raider coach Dale Marks, “We just wanted to come out and play hard; our subs got a good chance to play in the second half, and that is a good thing.”

Leading the way for the Raiders was David Bogese who had 90 yards on 14 carries. Other top rushers for the Raiders were Rashodd Maxey had 46 yards on 10 carries and Will Edwards had 35 yards rushing on six carries.

Leading the way for the Warriors was Ferly Yerby, who went 15-of-33 while passing for 142 yards, including for 2 touchdowns and an interception.

With 8:15 left in the first quarter Bogese got things started for the Raiders with a 5-yard touchdown run.

“They were stopping our main play,” said Marks. “We started going outside a little bit and that is when things opened up for us a little bit, probably should of done that sooner. “

With 7:42 left in the second quarter. Wesley Barnes connected with Bogese for a 7-yard passing touchdown.

With 3:09 left in the second quarter, Yerby threaded a 25-yard pass through the hands of a Raiders defender to find Lamont Moore for a touchdown.

“Pass defense is not our strong point,” said Marks. “We are not the best when it comes to playing in space; we’re better against the run and guys that run it inside.”

On the kickoff return, Barnes had a 35-yard run that ended on Tidewater Academy’s 45-yard line. With 40 seconds left on the clock, John Hinkle found the end zone for the Raiders from 2 yards out. The 2-point conversion by Bogese was good.

The Raiders began their next drive with 10:57 left in the third quarter, after taking possession of the ball as a result of four straight incomplete passes by Yerby. Hinkle found the end zone after breaking three tackles on a 24-yard run.

With 8 minutes left in the third quarter, Yerby had a 10-yard scramble, but fumbled at the end of the run. Raider Matt Nixon recovered the fumble. The Raiders took over on their own 40-yard line.

With 1:57 left in the third Bogese scored off of a 4-yard run. The 2-point conversion by Maxey was good.

The Raiders took over on downs to begin the fourth quarter. With 4:50 left in the game, Will Edwards made it to the end zone after a 7-yard run.

“I thought their kids played really hard,” said Marks. “The scheme that they run — the coach does a good job with that. They throw the ball around and put some pressure out there.”

The Raiders have a bye next week, but will host Quantico on Oct. 22 for the Academy’s Homecoming game. The Warriors will host Quantico on Oct. 15 in Wakefield at 7 p.m.
