WINDSOR, Va. — Martha Cofield Griffin, 87, of Windsor, passed away Monday, Oct. 11, 2010 at Consulate Healthcare of Windsor.

She was born on Aug. 29, 1923, to the late Hudson P. and Dollie Cofield. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward W. Griffin. Martha is survived by her daughter, Betsy Woodruff, and son-in-law, David, of Blacksburg, Va., and her grandson Barry Griffin Battle and wife Kathryn, of Fairfax, Va. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Mildred Cofield, of Smithfield, Va. Martha was the youngest of seven children, and all six of her siblings preceded her in death: Ida Ruth Holland, Emmett Cofield, Louise Whitley, H.P. Cofield, Margaret Cofield, Robert Cofield. She is survived by the following nieces and nephews: Jackie Holland, Tommy Holland, Dell Joyner, Jacklyn Meeker, Daphne Harris, Trip Cofield, Garry Cofield, Bob Cofield, Jimmy Cofield. At the time of her retirement in 1978, Martha was the assistant director of the Isle of Wight County Social Services Department. She was a lifelong member of Woodland United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school, was an active member of several of the women’s organizations, and served as the assistant organist for many years.

A private family graveside service will be held at Woodland United Methodist Church on Thursday, Oct. 14 by the Rev. Michael Harrington. The family requests that you join them in a celebration of Martha’s life in a memorial service at Woodland United Methodist Church on Oct. 23 at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Robert F. Cofield Jr. It was Martha’s wish that at her death, donations, in lieu of flowers, be made to one of the following: Edward Griffin Memorial Fund c/o Woodland United Methodist Church, 20051 Orbit Road, Windsor, VA 23487 or the Windsor Volunteer Rescue Squad, 19 E.
