Captain teams reach NCAAs

Christopher Newport’s field hockey team will host Lynchburg (16-3) in the first round of the NCAA Div. 3 Tournament Wednesday in Newport News.
CNU (15-3) has reached the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight season. Senior Katelyn Yandle (Nansemond River) leads the Lady Captains with 14 goals and she has three assists. Sophomore Breanne Lowe (Nansemond River) has played in 15 matches.
CNU is undefeated at home this season. Wednesday’s victor goes on to the round of 16 at Messiah in Grantham, Pa. Saturday. Christopher Newport is hosting the national semifinals and final.
CNU’s No. 2-ranked men’s soccer team won the USA South Tournament this weekend in Martinsville. The Captains beat Averett 1-0 and N.C. Wesleyan 3-1 in the final, avenging their only loss (19-1-1) of the season.
Junior Trevor Moyer (Nansemond River) is a CNU defender and played in the N.C. Wesleyan match. The Captains have been ranked in the top two of the country, NCAA Div. 3, for most of the season.
The NCAA Tournament field was to be announced Monday afternoon.
Lynchburg senior Michelle Boucher (Nansemond-Suffolk) was named second-team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference for the second time in her Lady Hornet volleyball career last week.
Boucher led Lynchburg in kills, averaging 7.8 per match. The Lady Hornets finished in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament and with an 18-11 overall record.
Longwood and Radford both fell to West Coast opponents in the Big South Conference field hockey tournament during the weekend in Davidson, N.C.
Longwood finished third in the conference, beating Cal-Davis 6-2, losing to Stanford 3-0 and beating Davidson 2-0. Sophomore Kaity Byrum (Lakeland) started the UC-Davis and Davidson games at midfield for the Lady Lancers. Longwood finishes 8-13 overall.
Radford lost to California 3-2 and beat Pacific 3-1. Junior back Lynsey Daughtrey (Lakeland) tallied an assist against Cal, then scored a goal and an assist against the Lady Tigers. Daughtrey had three goals, four assists and three defensive saves on the season. Radford finishes 9-11 overall.
